Application modernisation

Legacy applications, rebuilt for the web.

Every organisation has one: the Access database, VB6 tool or Notes application that runs a critical process and that nobody wants to touch. We rebuild it as a secure web application in a fixed-price 30-day sprint, or module by module if it is larger.

What is legacy application modernisation?

Legacy application modernisation is the rebuilding or upgrading of business applications written on platforms that are no longer supported or no longer fit for purpose, such as Visual Basic 6, Delphi, PowerBuilder, Microsoft Access, Oracle Forms, Lotus Notes, classic ASP, ColdFusion, AngularJS or older .NET Framework and PHP versions.

The usual result is a secure web application that keeps the business rules and data of the original, adds single sign-on, role-based access and audit logging, and runs on a supported platform that current developers can maintain. Microsoft, for example, has not supported the Visual Basic 6.0 development environment since 8 April 2008.

Applications that fit a sprint

Illustrative examples. Larger applications are split by module, with each module live before the next starts.

An Access or Excel system the business runs on

Rebuilt as a multi-user web application on a proper database, with the data migrated, validated and backed up.

A VB6, Delphi or PowerBuilder desktop app

Screens and logic rebuilt for the browser, with the same data and the steps users already know.

Lotus Notes applications

Notes databases and workflows moved to Microsoft 365 or a purpose-built web application.

.NET Framework to .NET 10

Older .NET applications moved to the current long-term support release, ready for Linux or cloud hosting.

Classic ASP, ColdFusion or old PHP

Rebuilt on a supported stack, with security fixed along the way.

Your riskiest application, rebuilt in 30-day sprints

A five-day Migration Blueprint maps the screens, rules, data and integrations, from A$9,500 and credited in full if you go ahead within 60 days. Then a fixed-price 30-day sprint.

FAQ

Application questions

What about the business rules buried in the old code?

They are documented as we go and carried across. Each rebuilt screen and process is tested to give the same results as the old application for the same inputs, and your users sign it off.

Will our people need retraining?

Usually very little. We keep familiar workflows and terminology where they work and fix the steps people complain about. Training and short guides are part of every sprint.

Can it work offline or on mobile?

Yes, where you need it. Modern web applications can work on phones and tablets and, where required, offline with sync.

Who hosts the new application?

You choose: your own cloud tenancy in an Australian region, your data centre, or a managed platform. You own the code and the hosting accounts.
